SPECIFIC DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This person is responsible for the design and development of custom parts and products and is expected to solve technical problems through the application of mechanical engineering theories and principals.
This person researches, designs and develops products as required using mechanical engineering design and development techniques. This may include producing shop drawings, design layouts, and applying material and process variables to solve design problems. They must be able to perform simple part tolerance analysis and complete drawings using ANSI drafting standards. Conceptualizes designs in a creative, practical manner for both present and possible future products. This person can draw upon practical experience and relate it to problem solving. Builds and tests prototypes for design verification and development which may include working with manufacturing personnel or working independently. .Must be able to estimate and plan complex prototypes in terms of materials and time. Plan and procure standard parts working with the purchasing department. Understands what variables need to be tested or evaluated, including design performance, manufacturing variables and any cost implications. Works well with production personnel and understands the general production processes. Understands production work flow through a company and how it relates to the design process. This would include receiving, processing, packing and shipment. Supports the Product Engineering process including input on production drawings, bills of materials and specifying of procured parts. Supports manufacturing of new or existing parts by lending information about design intent and development. This individual can help solve complex manufacturing problems.
Occasionally assists and supports other design projects or manufacturing problems relating to tooling or process. This could include periodic customer or vendor contact. Supports others during in-house, technical presentations, including information gathering and or direct participation of the discussion.
Performs indoor office functions but may also have frequent exposure to warehouse and manufacturing environments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Talking/Hearing: Must be able to exchange ideas, convey information to employees and customers accurately and clearly. Ability to give and receive information through verbal and written communication. Frequent use of computer keyboard and drawing of technical drawings. Ability to write and complete paperwork. Periodic use of hand tools and machinery in the development and construction of prototypes. Occasional lifting and carrying of parts, products, and/or prototypes weighing up to 40 pounds. Position requires the use of near, mid-range and far vision with clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less. The ability to judge distance and space relationships, distinguish color and see objects where and as they are. Extensive visual concentration required of drawing, computer and reading.
SPECIFIC SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
Advanced knowledge of AutoCad 2003 is a must. An understanding of the principals of design engineering including concept development, product design and engineering drawings are essential. Mechanical aptitude and an understanding of the general manufacturing processes •Ability to create mechanical drawings using ANSI drafting rules. •Ability to measure with precision. Creative ability to apply practical solutions to design problems. •Must have some experience with word processing and e-mail software and good written communication skills. •Ability to participate in a team environment. Good attention to detail.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
This position requires design engineering experience and typically has extensive experience with commercial storefront and display fixture manufacturing processes. Desired Education and experience: mechanical design graduate from an accredited trade school with 4 years experience in a related industry. A BS in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Design from an accredited university with 2 years of design experience in a mechanical product or production environment or equivalent experience.
