Chemist (Mesa, AZ)

  • Job Description: Polyurethane manufacturer seeks a chemist to develop, evaluate and improve polyurethane formulations for spray, rigid, flexible, pour and elastomer systems as well as work with acrylic coatings and polyols. The ideal candidate will have experience working with polyurethane systems and a background in polymer chemistry. Position includes managing and supporting the plant Quality Control process. Position reports to and works with the Head Chemist on all projects. Professional development and growth opportunities available.  
     
    Primary duties include: 
    • Knowledge of spray systems, both open and closed cell, and the related regulatory and approval requirements for spray systems qualified under US and Canadian building codes 
    • Knowledge in the art of formulating polyurethane systems to achieve particular physical properties, reactivity profiles and/or customer specifications 
    • Manage the quality control process for production systems, evaluating test samples and making appropriate recommendations where necessary to adjust systems to conform to specifications 
    • Perform tests in compliance with ASTM regulatory procedures 
    • Maintains logs of troubleshooting and maintenance for analytical equipment 
    • Gathers appropriate information for management approval related to new procedures 
    • Report on development activities to the Head Chemist 
    • Work collaboratively with other employees to achieve desired business results 
    • Collaborate regularly with other employees in problem solving, brainstorming, and process improvement 
    • Professionally document lab work, product formulation, approval and launch, including MSDS 
    • Professional maintenance of laboratory notebook with accurate and thorough records of work 
    • Proactive upkeep of lab cleanliness, equipment calibration, and stock of supplies 
     
    Candidate must have: 
    • Completed four years of BA or BS Degree in Chemistry or related field, MS or PhD preferred 
    • Experience in polyurethanes technology and/or 5+ years’ experience in the polyurethane industry 
    • Ability to tabulate, statistically analyze and produce appropriate summaries to provide to team members and management in a timely fashion with attention to detail 
    • Proficient in basic laboratory skills and ability to mentor, teach and manage a laboratory environment, including all safety and regulatory procedures 
    • Experience with quality controls systems, standards, measurement and reporting tools 
    • Ability and desire to learn application and production requirements for the variety of systems 
    • Physical requirements include occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds 
    • Be resourceful and a problem-solver 
    • Be a high performer, self-motivated and possess a high level of energy 
    • High level of skill using MS Office products 
    • Understanding and ability to use statistical software is a plus 
    • High level of interpersonal skills 
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
    • Possess a strong work ethic and collaboration skills

    Candidates must also have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and clean driving record.
