Groundskeeper/Event Services Worker (Phoenix)

  • Since 1977, Sojourner Center has offered shelter as well as comprehensive services to thousands of women and children fleeing domestic violence. Sojourner Center is the largest domestic violence shelter in the nation with the capacity to serve 2,800 women and children annually. The Center operates 124 emergency shelter beds from its Heritage Campus, 100 beds from its Hope Campus, as well as 32 transitional apartments.

    This is the entry level into the facilities services. Incumbents perform basic custodial, building or grounds maintenance, or general laborer work. Duties might include: picking up trash and debris, mowing the grass; performing building maintenance such as changing light bulbs; vacuuming; cleaning and maintaining restrooms; and, performing general laborer type work such as moving furniture and room set-up. Incumbents may also operate light equipment such as vehicles, tractors, and mowers. There will be times when the Incumbents may work as a team member, will work under general supervision, and perform most tasks with some independence.

    An ideal candidate for this position would have:
    **High School Diploma or G.E.D.
    **Valid Arizona Driver’s License
    ** Knowledge of:
    Customer service principles
    Inventory maintenance principles
    Safe work practices
    Methods and tools used in assigned area of responsibility
    Hand and power tools, Trees, plants, shrubs and lawns indigenous to Arizona and their care requirements
    Gardening methods and tools.
    Herbicide and insecticide applications a plus but not required.
    Irrigation systems.
    Plants, irrigates, fertilizes and weeds grounds;
    Mixes soils, seedlings, trims hedges
    Performs sprinkler system repair, maintenance and troubleshooting;
    Maintain a timer controlled sprinkler system;
    Trims and prunes tree branches;
    Operates and performs maintenance on power lawn mowers such as changing oil, and parts lubrication and adjustment;
    Repairs benches, and playground equipment;
    Cleans patios, and sidewalks and picks up leaves and litter
    Replenishes and cleans restrooms, offices, meeting spaces, and recreation rooms,
    Paints building surfaces, bleachers, and picnic tables;
    Sets up and remove folding tables, chairs,
    Digs up ground for flower beds, ditches, and holes for sign posts;
    Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

    **Skill in:
    Providing customer service;
    Operating tools and equipment in assigned area of responsibility;
    Performing routine carpentry and groundskeeping tasks;
    Comprehending written materials;
    Performing routine preventative maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles;
    Driving a motor vehicle;
    Bi-lingual Spanish-English preferred but not required
    Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

    **Physical Requirements:
    Move objects weighing up to 50 pounds) short distances (20 feet or less)
    Bend or stoop repeatedly over time and repetitive motions.

    **Additional Requirements:
    Some positions require the use of personal or organization vehicles on official business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

    Shift: Full-time, 40 hours, hours may vary
