Rails Developer (Scottsdale)

  • ChatterPlug, a marketing platform, is looking for a user-experience minded Rails developer (all-around skills is a plus but not necessary — i.e. both front and backend) who can play a key role in its ongoing development. Full-time, part-time and contract roles will be considered.

    ChatterPlug will rely on the developer to:
    • Integrate with partners’ APIs to improve our data (especially our location and place data), provide additional functionality to users and encourage importing and exporting of content through strategic partners APIs
    • Maintain a stable, well-documented API and integration strategy (authentication scheme, widgets, etc.) that can be easily put to use by high-traffic partners.
    • Develop and maintain the ChatterPlug web presence
    • Recommend, implement and prioritize features
    • Developing logic and algorithms for ranking content and delivering more relevant recommendations based on reputation, context and external data.
    • Ensure that ChatterPlug is efficient, stable and scalable.
    • Experience with embedded software / integrations is a plus

    Position Overview
    Strategy & Planning
    • In partnership with the company’s executive team, identify opportunities and risks for delivering the company’s services as a mobile and web-based business, including identification of competitive services, opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to business success.
    • Evaluate and identify appropriate technology platforms (including mobile/web application frameworks and the deployment stack) for delivering the company’s services.
    • Collaborate with the appropriate departments to assess and recommend technologies that support company organizational needs.

    Implementation & Deployment
    • Collaborate with the executive team and potential strategic partners to develop use cases (or user stories) and specifications that describe the implementation of the company’s services as a mobile and web application.
    • Manage outsourced vendors for tech-related items
    • Establish and participate in a quality assurance process, including integration and system testing.
    • Work alongside other developers to review and test proposed development releases and help manage the release process.
    • Assist with building test suites to ensure code isn’t breaking and correctly deployed.
    • Assist with application deployment process and supervise deployment to staging and production servers.
    • Monitor application performance and review/fix any application failures in staging or production.
    • Establish and monitor a web and mobile analytics regime that measures site traffic and application usage relative to business goals.
    • Support the marketing process by providing implementation of technical requirements for Internet marketing and search engine optimization.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices.
    • Ensure that technology standards and best practices are maintained across the organization.

    Position Requirements
    Formal Education & Certification
    • University degree in the field of computer science, business administration, or another rigorous discipline. An advanced degree in one these fields is a plus.

    Knowledge & Experience
    • Demonstrated ability to envision web-based services that meet business enterprise needs or solve business problems.
    • Hands-on experience coding in more than one currently popular web and mobile application frameworks.
    • Familiar with more than one software development methodology and extensive Rails experience.
    • Ability to discern user requirements and develop specifications.
    • Has contributed to one or more open source projects.
    • Skill with CSS, XHTML, one or more Javascript frameworks, and AJAX is a plus
    • Knowledge of mobile and web standards.
    • Experience with UNIX system administration and web server configuration.
    • Knowledge of Internet protocols and RFC standards, database management systems, and revivion control systems.
    • Familiarity with technical requirements of Internet marketing and search engine optimization is a plus.
    • Familiarity with information security vulnerabilities and risk management.

    • You’ve built, scaled and optimized Ruby (on and off rails) applications and web services to significant levels of growth.
    • You understand (or can quickly wrap your brain around) the complexities of location-based applications and location data.
    • You know how to measure the impact of decisions through metrics and testing
    • You’re relentless about execution and detail.
    • You have extensive server and relational database architecture experience (Linux/MySQL).
    • You’ve worked in a test-driven, collaborative and iterative development environment.
    • If you have mobile, iPhone, Android or Facebook experience, all are also a plus!
