Creative Machines is a 10-person design and fabrication shop looking for a metal fabricator with the following qualities:

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

MIG welding. Must have good technique and produce welds that are not only structurally sound but aesthetically good, as we produce welded sculptures in highly visible locations. Within two months of starting we expect you to be able to pass a MIG welding certification test in the horizontal position using solid core wire.

You must be a team player, able to pitch in and help others with their work as needed in order to improve the overall quality and quantity of work produced by the company. In return, you can expect others to help you. You must be willing to take direction from others as well as offer them your opinions on techniques, construction, and brainstorming ideas to achieve the big picture. This will require creativity, imagination and communication as well as technical skills.

When given a task you must be able to imagine the finished product and work to develop an efficient plan for achieving that. Must be able to think a task through to the end and pace yourself so that you approach it with the right amount of speed and foresight.

Comfortable in a custom fabrication environment. We rarely do the same thing and there is always room for learning and improvement. You must always seek better ways of doing things and suggest them. Often these suggestions will be taken, but at times you will have to follow directions.

Our work is all custom and incredibly varied. Some days you will be greatly challenged and work on very exciting projects that achieve high visibility. But then will come days of monotonous sanding, grinding, cutting up scrap metal, or loading materials into and out of a machine. You must accept it all in stride and not feel that some work is ‘beneath you’. We all do the full range here. Although you would primarily be a metal fabricator, there may be times when you work with other materials for considerable periods.

Take responsibility for the finished products you work on. If issues arise, bring them to the attention of a manager immediately.

Be in reasonably good shape and able to lift 25 pounds of weight frequently throughout the work day.

Be able to communicate politely and thoughtfully with clients, suppliers and coworkers.

Must have reliable transportation.

DESIRABLE but not ESSENTIAL

Familiarity and skill with other metalworking tools:
TIG welder
Horizontal bandsaw
Manual lathe
Manual mill
Hand held grinding and finishing tools

College graduate, any major

Some CNC experience helpful.

Ability to interpret drawings.

Familiarity with standard steel shapes and fabrication techniques.

Knowledge of materials and machine tool selection.

You will start as an hourly employee for a two-month trial period. After that you will have the option to transition to a salaried employee. Salaried employees are provided with health insurance and are expected to put in an average of 40-50 hours. At times you will put in more than this, but other times are slower. We install our work all over the US and in many foreign countries and you may be asked to travel for installation trips.
